 With a greater number of lifts and ski areas, than anywhere else, the credentials are all there for great ski vacations. But Whistler is more than merely a ski destination, as thousands of families discover each year, and there is something special for each season.

Apart from dog sledding, tobogganing, skating and all the obvious winter and summer activities for kids there are a whole lot of things to do that you may not have even considered.  Let’s have a look at what makes Whistler special for families - and especially children.

Whistler Kids Ski School

There are lot’s of opportunities for ski camps and private ski, and snowboard lessons. Groups are determined by both age and ability levels then there is not a concern that our kids are expected to keep pace with the local Vancouver kids.Once kids are in their groups they are designated a team of coaches who travel with the team across the mountain - with GPS aids. 

Lessons can come in packages depending on how many days you are willing to spend away from your kids. And camps to can range from a couple of days to five days. Kids can progress through age specific groups- with 3 -4 year olds,  5-6 year olds, 7 -12 year olds, and teens all having distinct groups. 

Teens activities also include Ride Tribes and Freeride when the conditions are right and provide lots of opportunities for new friendships.

Peak 2 Peak Gondola

For around $50 adults and $25 for children folks can enjoy the achievement that is the Gondola. This includes the ride up the mountain and unlimited crossings. From your elevated position enjoy views around the valleys and mountains, perhaps lunch or a meal, and witness the working parts and machinery in action.

From June to September on the mountain kids can enjoy the Family Adventure Zone. At the time of writing there were 14 entertaining things to do for kids from 10am to 6pm daily - 8pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

The summer luge is perhaps the most popular of these and winds it way down over 300 metres of mountain slope. There is also a maze, golf, mini bungee trampoline, horse trail rides, go karts, a human gyro that was developed by NASSA, jumping slides castes and ropes courses.

Whistler Mountain Bike Park

Mountainbiking enjoys the luxury that it is gravity fed at Whistler. This means you don’t need to climb. From open greens to immaculately made tracks with jumps, stunts, drops and flops.  Check out the video below of how impressively some kids negotiate the trails on rented bike.

Whistler Family Eco and Bear Tours

If it’s a natural experience you are seeking for your kids during the summer you may like to check out some of the Bear viewing and eco tours available. There are 50 black bears that now live in the areas around the ski slopes.  Learn about the local ecology the bears are situated within and their movements up and down the mountains with the seasons.

This is a an activity suited to children 9 years or older, and binoculars are included. Tours often run three times daily and the meeting spot is at the bottom of the  Wizard Express at Blackcomb Base.

These tours are available for all ages. For really small children the tours are free which is nice for families. Many tours are educational while others are more geared towards the adventure seeking family.
